Decades of poetry on Phantom posters around the globe

AUCKLAND, Today: In the run-up to Phantom Billstickers National Poetry Day (Friday 26 August), Phantom took a wider look at the way poetry lives on posters.

Phantom founder Jim Wilson said: “The fact is, we’ve been placing poems in public places for over two decades – and not just in New Zealand.”

The latest Phan Mail newsletter provides snapshots of poem posters “from Philadelphia to St Petersburg” …

  • Ben Brown at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin
  • Chris Knox in the Pushkin Cafe in St Petersburg
  • Elizabeth Smithers The Heart Heals Itself Between Beats at a camel-drinking station near the India-Pakistan border
  • Janet Frame lights up Times Square
  • A drizzly afternoon in Pennsylvania was the setting for David Merritt

“Jim Wilson has never hidden his belief that poetry should be public. He personally pasted many of the poems listed here during his travels in Aotearoa and abroad.”

“In nearby Philadelphia, we caught Tusiata Avia in the act of posting one of her poems. That took place when we brought four New Zealand poets (and their poem posters) to the USA.

“There are many, many more. Too many to include in one edition of Phan Mail.

It’s one of the reasons Phantom Billstickers is the chief sponsor of National Poetry Day.

“The other reason,” he says “is that we love a bloody good read.”
