The Wellington Phoenix have taken a cheeky dig at the new Auckland FC football franchise, engaging Quantum Jump to come up with something to remind everyone how important the Phoenix are to football in New Zealand.
Ahead of their game in Auckland this Saturday, the Phoenix have launched a campaign to get the borders of Greater Wellington extended by 700 kilometres to just north of Whangārei, to ensure future Auckland games are still ‘home games’. The campaign includes the suggestion that the Kerikeri Sports Complex is a great ready-made option for the new Auckland FC.
“When the border is moved, our fans in the Far North would only have to make a short trip down State Highway One to be in Wellington and support the Phoenix” said Phoenix general manager David Dome.
“It’s fair to say Auckland doesn’t have a great track record in professional football, unlike Wellington,” said Phoenix general manager David Dome. “The Phoenix are unbeatable at Eden Park and it doesn’t make sense Saturday’s match will be our last home game at the venue. We have thousands of fans in Auckland and they don’t want to have to support the new expansion franchise. Bringing Tāmaki Makaurau into the Wellington Super City will ensure our loyal supporters can continue to cheer on the ‘Nix.”
“Quantum Jump have given us a great boost for this Saturday’s game, ensuring that Auckland FC didn’t get the media noise all their own way on Thursday” commented Phoenix marketing manager Emma Rogers. “The petition is getting momentum, and so is the media coverage of our campaign to move the border” continued Rogers.
“We’re passionate about football here at QJ, and the chance to support the Phoenix, who have done so much to raise the credentials of Kiwi football, was something we jumped into with zeal, a bit like a Vinnie Jones tackle” commented Ben Goodale, Quantum Jump CEO. “Without mixing too many metaphors, perhaps we can ‘bend it like Beckham’ and get the border moved so that the ‘Nix continue to be at home here in Auckland” continued Goodale.
