New Zealand’s best journalists have been recognised in a night of glitz and glamour at the 2022 Voyager Media Awards.
Fifty-nine awards were announced on Saturday, August 20th at Cordis in Auckland, spanning across Print/Text Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Photography and All Media.
Brook Cameron, GM of the News Publishers Association which manages the Voyager Media Awards, says New Zealand’s journalists have been an integral source of connection and a trusted voice during an extended period of uncertainty.
“By recognising not only excellence in journalism, but also the value of journalism to society, the NPA is honoured to bring the Voyager Media Awards season together each year. Tonight’s gala event was a wonderful industry wide celebration of independent, trusted, fact-checked, quality journalism.”
Stuff was a big winner on the night, taking home 21 prizes in total at this year’s awards, including Best Editorial Project, Broadcast Reporter of the Year – Current Affairs, Reporter of the Year, and both the Metropolitan and Voyager Newspaper of the Year categories.
This Is How It Ends, Stuff’s seven-part documentary series on New Zealand’s biodiversity crisis, won joint Best Editorial Project, while Stuff Circuit’s Paula Penfold won Broadcast Reporter of the Year – Current Affairs, on top of the Circuit team’s Best Innovation in Digital Storytelling win for Deleted, an investigation into New Zealand connections to the persecution of Uyghurs in China.
Senior Journalist Kirsty Johnston won Reporter of the Year for a portfolio of impact journalism the judges agreed “connected with the reader at such a level that they stayed with you long after you put them down.”
New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME) also took out an impressive haul of digital, team and individual awards, with BusinessDesk celebrating a win too.
NZ Herald won two esteemed digital awards for the third year in a row – Website of the Year and News App of the Year. The Weekend Herald was named Weekly Newspaper of the Year and Canvas magazine judged best newspaper magazine.
Shayne Currie, NZME Managing Editor, says NZME’s awards are testament to the stellar work of the company’s journalists.
“To win the two biggest digital awards in 2020 was a massive achievement and to repeat it in 2021 was astounding. Three years in a row is simply phenomenal. The past three years have marked an extraordinary news period. To be judged best in New Zealand over that time is a tribute to the extraordinary talent and dedication of our editorial teams and the quality, trusted journalism they produce each day, as well as the strength of our digital product and development teams,” says Currie.
Other big winners on the night included NZ Herald’s Hamish Fletcher for Editorial Executive of the Year, The Press for Newspaper of the Year, NZ Herald’s Brett Phibbs for Photographer of the Year, Stuff’s Ross Giblin for Video Journalist of the Year, and Mediawork’s Tova O’Brien for Broadcast Reporter of the Year – News.
