News publishers sign up for Facebook funding

AUCKLAND, Wednesday: Facebook owner Meta is set to provide cash grants to 13 New Zealand news publishers as part of its latest digital training programme, reports Daniel Dunkley in online news site BusinessDesk.

Dunkley writes: “Publishers and broadcasters including MediaWorks, Māori Television and the Otago Daily Times have signed up for Meta’s Audience Development Accelerator.

“They will be taught how to squeeze more revenue from the social media platform and transition to digital.

“Meta will guide the publishers on building their audience and subscriber numbers through Facebook.

They include The Ashburton Guardian, women’s mag Capsule, Mandarin Pages, Indian Weekender, Pacific Media, Radio BoP, Shit You Should Care About, ODT, and The Wairarapa Times-Age.”

“Following the programme, the news companies will apply for a grant from Meta to ‘help them develop new initiatives’.

“A diverse mix of news outlets is on board. The group of 13 also includes the Ashburton Guardian, women’s magazine Capsule, Crux Publishing, Local Matters, Mandarin Pages, Indian Weekender, Pacific Media Network, Radio Bay of Plenty, Shit You Should Care About, and The Wairarapa Times-Age.”

BusinessDesk is owned by NZME – but has its own, independent editorial team.
